Shady Liberty Footbridge
Completion 2009 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
East Liberty Redevelopment Agency
16’x 28’ x 90’ Pedestrian bridge linking 2 neighborhoods

Pittsburgh City Paper Article

The footbridge creates a new pedestrian street between East Liberty and Shadyside. It takes the Penn Dot and City requirements for a bridge, and rearranges them to make a more vivid experience of passage. Typical elements of streetscape make an urban arbor/portal /path that acts as a street. Transplanted elements of a sidewalk: landscape, lighting, a path, and street striping morph into a new locale.

The scheme creates a place unlike anywhere else but wholly related to both safety and engineering. The artful juxtaposition of elements are meant to make you look twice. The pathway transforms an otherwise monolithic surface to a painting abstract expressionistic painting on the ground plane. Inspired by the city of Pittsburgh street striping testing area I saw Landscape and lighting flank the central scalloped path.

The experience of walking across the bridge will be one of civilized surprise; dramatic and formal, yet playful and functional.
