Sarkhej Roza 2013
Community Art Collaboration
Ahmedabad, India
An exhibition and series of events will kick off a two year multi-layered collaborative project held at National Institute of Design(NID) and the Sarkhej Roza Monument in Ahmedabad, India. An artwork made by artist Sheila Klein in collaboration with the women from the community near the monument will be produced to benefit the Sarkhej Roza improvement fund. The monument is comprised of mausoleums, palaces and a mosque. Sarkhej Roza is known as "Ahmedabad's Acropolis" due to 20th century architect Le Corbusier's famous comparison of the architectural design to the Acropolis of Athens. The project was initiated in collaboration with the artist, the Ahmedabad Community Action Group, NID and the monument. The artwork produced, an architectural textile based on the monument, will be crocheted of vegetable dyed cotton and the material will be locally sourced.

Additionally, a series of textile based items will be designed in collaboration with the artist, NID alumni and students as an income stream for the women, and to continually fund projects for the community. We invite you to become a part of a global group of makers connecting cross cultural ideas through art, architecture and community.
